What's it really like to work for L.B. Foster?

Carla recently explained to her boss and Sheffield GM, Mike Hull how she felt that working for L.B Foster “was the best job she’s ever had!”

As part of our new vision and values engagement work, it’s been fantastic to hear from Carla Dent who’s been with us for a short time and works as a Project Manager at the Rail Technologies offices in Sheffield. Carla recently explained to her boss and Sheffield GM, Mike Hull how she felt that working for L.B. Foster “was the best job she’s ever had!” So, we had to find out more and Carla let us into her thoughts about the business and her experiences since she came to us seven months ago.

Carla is an exceptionally well qualified and dynamic Project Manager who has an honours degree in modern language studies as well as several master planning and production planning skills. Not only that she’s multi lingual and has had several roles being part of major rail facing businesses such as Wabtec Faiveley and others.

She told us that many of the experiences that impacted her most came from her first few days. Her interview and follow up from the HR team were “brilliant” and she was impressed at the level of “right first-time detail”, well delivered. Something she says is something of a rarity in many other organisations she’s come across. She enjoyed a preview day with the team before she started and again highlights L.B. Foster’s sensitivity to good talent management and ensuring that the business recognises the immediate and longer-term needs of its employees.

One key thing which made a difference she says is the feeling of empowerment by Mike and her colleagues. “I feel that I’m allowed to make decisions based on my knowledge and skills. You generally get back what you invest in a job and I’m seeing lots of professional and personal benefits in this investment of energy and skills, including a role change to Project Manager”.

Carla went on to say she’s enjoyed working with the other solution centres in Nottingham and Herne, Germany. She feels that the ‘people part’, which characterises the Sheffield centre exists elsewhere, although she recognises that some people would benefit from seeing the message of the wider European business and global reach.
